![]() I don’t need any dsp as I use the SSL4000G and outboard gear for monitoring and mixing. I’m trying to move into pt ultimate HD from pt11 vanilla so I can integrate a Burl Mothership into my rig. I'll have to look at the specs to see what the RTL numbers are. Good to hear! I haven't heard anything about the Quantum interface, good bad or indifferent, so it's nice to hear something positive. The one session went off without a hitch though so I'm hopeful that it might be an alternative.TexasCat, In the time I've had it I've only tracked a whole band once ( I work by myself and remotely most of the time) so my experience with how solid it performs under stress is limited. You have to be mindful of the plugins you use while tracking but I think you have that with HDX as well. I've had this setup for a couple of months and it works pretty well. It does however require you to have a pretty recent computer with Thunderbolt. If you have one of the Quantums that have Preamps it will even control them as well. Presonus Studio One with their Quantum interface works the same way as Pro Tools HDX in the sense that everything is integrated within the DAW without an external app for monitoring. UA's Apollo, like Brent and Psycho Monkey mentioned, looks good on paper but in the real world it doesn't perform anywhere close to an HDX system. I guess from all the responses I've gotten over the years, there really is no substitute for HDX at the moment. However, compare the specs, maybe a mini can get you there. I sold a 2013 fully maxed out iMac earlier this year for dirt cheap once I upgraded to an iMac Pro. You'll want as much horsepower as you can get and I think a mac mini, although powerful for what it is, can't compare to a Mac Pro or later model iMac. Also, I would purchase a used Mac Pro (Trashcan) or later model iMac before I would buy a mac mini. I also bought an Avid Pre used and too works like new, so used is the way to go. I would look at getting a used HDX rig if you want to stick with Pro Tools, they've come down in price significantly and used is fine, I purchased a used Avid I/O 16x16 for half price years ago and it works like new. 1.7 ms Latency is pretty high when tracking. I'm going to get A MOTU 16a interface (I think it's only 1.7 ms latency) and I truly believe that I'll be able to track live drums (without complaints) and then record more overdubs with no noticeable latency.Īm I making a mistake, or are the new Mac Minis (with HD Native) able to handle ~70-80 tracks of mixing with lots of plugs?Īny guys out there running this kind of system? I'm about to pull the trigger (please feel free to chime in and tell me I'm crazy) on a new Mac Mini and go from my TDM system (5 Accel cards) to HD Native. I don't want to pay $3500 for an HDX card if there's no real need in doing so. I, like you, love PT and have become alienated with their aggressive price increases. Great thread, and I don't mean to hijack it.
